I have often wondered what is the hood vent for? Is it merely for cosmetic purposes? Or it has other significant use for the car? As far as cosmetic appeal is concerned, the part looks great on the car, and the car looks great with it. But further research gave me the information of how this accessory is not only anchored to its capability to improve well the appearance of the car making it sportier but functions to improve its performance. Purportedly, the hood vent, as I aptly call it, is also what most call the hood scoop. The function of which is not only about aesthetics but forces cool air into the engine compartment from the outside. The air goes directly into the intake of the engine and ahead its fuel injection manifold or carburetor, and air cleaner. Apparently, the engine’s performance is improved because there is more cool air for the engine to breathe. More amount of cooler and denser air usually entails increased power because the engine gets to breathe even more and use more for efficient burning of the fuel.
Hhmmm… That gives my thoughts more free analyzing activities. Usually, I see hood vent or hood scoop situated on top of the hood just where the cowl resides near it by the windshield. Sometimes, I see scoops with their opening facing the windshield in some cars while other cars are installed with scoops with reversed opening. Usually, it is here in this location where high-pressure area takes place. The rush of air that comes forward the approaching vehicle makes high-pressure zone in the curvature of the windshield. Logically enough, as the scoops are installed in this location, there are lots of air that are going to be admitted through the opening of the vent. So, that is most likely the reason why hood vents or scoops are typically found on this area atop the hood, just like what you would see on the picture of Britney below with her Mercedes SL500 hood scoop or hood vent.
